US REVISITING THE VALUE OF ELITE COLLEGES

US REVISITING THE VALUE OF ELITE COLLEGES
The New York Times
May 23, 2011
By David Leonhardt

A decade ago, two economists — Stacy Dale and Alan Krueger — published a research paper arguing that elite colleges did not seem to give most graduates an earnings boost. As you might expect, the paper received a ton of attention. Ms. Dale and Mr. Krueger have just finished a new version of the study — with vastly more and better data, covering people into their 40s and 50s, as well as looking at a set of more recent college graduates — and the new version comes to the same conclusion.

Krueger writes this, "That you go to college is more important than where you go. Recognize that your own motivation, ambition and talents will determine your success more than the college name on your diploma."

US 2011 STUDYING ABROAD: US IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN

US 2011 STUDYING ABROAD: US IN A LEAGUE OF ITS OWN
Think US universities are elitist and prohibitively expensive? Think again. The States can open doors, says Chris Alden.

The Telegraph
Posted May 23, 2011

Which country is the number one foreign-study destination? A glance at the upper reaches of the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings is all you need to find your answer. Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), California Institute of Technology (Caltech): there are no fewer than seven US institutions in the top 10, and 21 in the top 30, so it‟s little wonder that the US is popular with British students.

“I think students realise that going to the US says something about them,” says Lauren Welch, head of advising at the Fulbright Commission, which represents American universities in the UK. In a recent survey, 91 per cent of British students cited the quality of universities as a reason for choosing the US.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY AWARDS ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL SHARING SCHOLARSHIPS

NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY AWARDS ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL SHARING SCHOLARSHIPS
The Academic and Cultural Sharing Scholarship reduces tuition for undergraduate international students to 50 percent of the out-of-state tuition rate. This scholarship is available to all bachelor's seeking international students who qualify for admission at North Dakota State University and hold F-1 student status.

Given the nature of the scholarship, recipients are expected to share their cultures with U.S. students, faculty, staff and members of the community in activities that are academically and culturally beneficial. This enables people to increase their knowledge of the scholarship recipients' cultures and countries of origin and to gain a better sense of global society. International students must apply before June 1 for Fall semester and November 1 for Spring semester.

Scholarships: Opportunity Fund Award

Scholarships: Opportunity Fund Award
 OPPORTUNITY FUND AWARD
Helping You Take the Next Step Toward Study in the U.S.!

Opportunity grants provide support for talented international students who may need financial help to take the next steps toward studying at an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States.

These grants are available now to help cover the upfront costs of seeking higher education in the U.S., and are part of EducationUSA's broad range of assistance to international students.

We want to demonstrate that international students like you are welcome in the U.S., and increase access to U.S. institutions of higher learning for deserving students who have broad interests and ambitions but modest means. These grants make it possible for students who would be otherwise unable to afford the costly application process to take the next step toward an education in the United States.

WHAT CAN THE AWARD PAY FOR?

The Opportunity Fund (OF) can cover various costs related to the application process and the process of getting to the USA to study. It does not cover tuition costs or costs for your study and stay in the USA. The OF covers upfront costs before going to the USA to help students in the initial stages of application to American colleges and universities in the USA.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

* You are a talented student with a strong academic record.

* You have good co-curricular involvement, positions of leadership, community service, etc.

* You want to study in the USA for an Undergraduate (Bachelor’s) Degree or for a Graduate Degree (Masters or PhD) from an American College or University.

* You plan to apply or have already applied to a college or university in the USA. Remember, whatever stage you are in the process, the OF is here to help you take the next step toward an American higher education. You may apply for the OF early, before you have started the process of applying to U.S. universities (for testing fees, etc), or you may even apply after acceptance at a school in the United States to help pay for Visa fees, etc.

* You have financial need to help you take the next steps toward higher education in the USA.

* This program is only open to students who will not receive a Fulbright or other U.S. Government-sponsored grant.
